The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
