The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
