Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
