The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
